Pipeline operators who are managing the threat of circumferential cracking in areas of active ground movement have the unusual challenge of having know-how to repair pipe wall conditions and remediate unstable slopes without a clear target for where or when such intervention may be warranted.

As a measure towards targeting circumferential cracking susceptibility, NDE-4-24 Framework Deliverable 3 “Circumferential Crack Hazard POF Analysis Process”, demonstrates how to calculate the probability of failure for circumferential cracking based on macroscopic landslide inter-action and site parameters. While the resulting probability of failure estimates are valuable in terms of evaluating acceptability and prioritizing sites for risk treatment, a follow-on process is needed to deterministically resolve contributing factors at a scale where remediation can be formulated.
The Risk Treatment Strategies for Circumferential Cracking provide guidance for evaluating risk, investigations for uncertainty reduction, determining a Risk Reduction Decision Type to inform selection of a risk reduction approach, and the full depth and variety of risk reduction options that can be deployed, subject to ranges of applicability. The objective is to maintain a suitable margin of safety for pipe wall integrity by undertaking appropriate and timely treatment of the circumferential cracking threat and causal ground movement.
