DATE: Thursday, August 23, 2018
TIME: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET
Presenter and Lead Researcher: Mr. Colton Sheets, Stress Engineering Services, Inc.
Host and Project Lead: Mr. Richard Kania, TransCanada
Moderator: Mr. Thomas Marlow, PRCI
Composite reinforcement systems have seen extensive use in the pipeline industry over the last two decades as solutions to address a range of pipeline integrity threats. Despite their widespread use, few options exist for reliable inspection of installed composite reinforcement systems. Additionally, there is a lack of well-defined criteria for acceptable flaw types and sizes when found during inspection of the composite repairs.
The purpose of this PRCI research project was to provide information regarding the current state of available composite inspection techniques, as well as the impact of delamination and disbondment defects on the performance of composite repairs. The results of this research provide operators with guidance on using inspection technologies to assess the integrity of installed composite repair systems.
Topics covered during the presentation will include:
• Inspection technologies and methods for inspecting composite repairs
• Qualifying what constitutes a “good” vs “bad” repair
• Determining whether certain defects in the repair are acceptable or not – quantifying a defects impact on performance
Expected Benefits/Learning Outcomes:
• Understanding of available inspection technologies/ methods for composite repairs
• Awareness of how composite defects impact the performance of the repair in reinforcing corrosion and dent anomalies.
