This white paper summarizes the results of a study to identify susceptibility criteria for the integrity threat to pipelines posed by “hard spots”.  Hard spots in the pipe body have acted as the origin for at least 85 leaks and ruptures in North American pipelines since the 1950s to the present time.  The hard spots were formed during the manufacturing of the plate or skelp used to form the finished line pipe.
