Risk management has been recognized as an essential decision-making tool in the pipeline industry over the past decade. However, there are still knowledge and process gaps that prevent broader implementation by industry stakeholders. The work described herein generated a gap analysis on risk management practices in the pipeline industry to define a future project roadmap that will be used to fill in the information, knowledge, and process gaps and to advance the application of risk management in the industry. A worldwide literature review of pipeline risk management practices was conducted, and industry inputs were collected through surveys and workshops. These tasks identified gaps in various technical area of risk management practices, which were then used as a basis to develop the scope, timeline, and funding requirements of the 10 potential projects in the related research roadmap.
