These criteria are widely used on underground buried structures such as oil and gas transmission pipelines to mitigate the risk of external corrosion. The objective of this work was to establish the effectiveness of cathodic protection criteria using field data from operational pipelines for variety of soil conditions and coating types. The recommendations included conducting several high-quality CIS runs during the ILI intervals, measuring coating quality and soil resistivity values, eliminating misalignment between ILI and CIS data using reference coordinates, and accounting for external corrosion where the root cause corrosion mechanisms would not relate to the level of CP.
