A review has been performed of past studies on external corrosion sponsored by the PRCI Corrosion Technical Committee (TC) with the aims of (a) providing a resource to current and future TC members, (b) identifying gaps in current understanding, and (c) to assist in future road-mapping exercises. A review has been performed of past studies on external corrosion sponsored by the PRCI Corrosion Technical Committee (TC) with the aims of (a) providing a resource to current and future TC members, (b) identifying gaps in current understanding, and (c) to assist in future road-mapping exercises. In support of these aims, the current report is structured in a similar manner to current and past Corrosion TC road maps, namely in terms of the assessment, mitigation, and prevention of external corrosion. The review is limited to reports associated with external corrosion, and does not include discussion of either internal corrosion or stress corrosion cracking. With the exception of a small number of seminal reports, studies published prior to 1990 have also been excluded from the review. In addition to studies specifically sponsored by the Corrosion TC, reports issued by other PRCI TC’s and by PHMSA that are related to the above topic areas have also been reviewed.
