For many operating companies, the majority of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) is generated from compression. Presently, there is not an industry wide metric demonstrating the relationship of energy consumed compared to compression output. This project aims to develop a CO2e compression efficiency curve to use as a baseline to understand the operating efficiency of a single unit or the entire facility. With this, inefficient operations can be identified and corrected. The baseline curves will depict how a "top tier" compression unit or facility should operate.
Starting with collecting station level data from numerous operating companies, a dataset was compiled and anonymized. A dashboard using Microsoft Excel as the platform was created to display the data parameters giving the user a multi-company wide view of the industry. The user is able to upload their own station data for direct comparison. Emissions are available for analysis, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide equivalent, methane, and NOx, and were determined using the EPA’s AP-42 emission factors and accompanying equation.
The project deliverable provides users with a repeatable, transparent, and accessible benchmarking method. The dashboard can be used as a tool to support emissions reduction, operational optimization, and long-term planning. It represents a crucial step toward an industry accepted compression facility metric. The intended target audience includes operators, engineers, managers, and executives.
