Join PRCI and The Center for Midstream Management & Science of Lamar University as they present Building Pipeline Infrastructure Resilience through Monitoring, Mapping and Modeling: A Case-Study of Land Subsidence Impacts in Southeast Texas.

By using the Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data captured in Southeast Texas in 2006 and 2017, respectively, a comprehensive method has been developed to identify hotspots with significant elevation changes along pipelines in that region over a long period of time.  These elevation changes are mostly due to subsidence, but minor uplift is indicated in some areas.  A method based on time series satellite radar interferometry (InSAR), together with resurveying of benchmarks using GPS, was used to identify subsidence hotspots. These three methods of measuring elevation changes over time do not interact with each other but provide unique results that can be compared to each other for consistency.  A method is then developed to analyze axial strain resulting from pipeline flexure owing to differential subsidence.

Highlights include:
  • Based on LiDAR data analysis, the 3D GIS model shows elevation changes from 2006 to 2017 in the area with intensive pipelines in Jefferson County, Southeast Texas
  • Subsidence hotspots in Southeast Texas are identified based on time-series InSAR data.
  • Onsite surveying of preexisting benchmarks will determine subsidence rates at single locations over various time periods.
  • A general method of pipeline axial strain resulting from flexure due to differential subsidence is applied to establish estimate of pipeline strain in hotspots.
  • The ultimate objective of this project is to work with industry partners and funding to expand this project beyond Southeast Texas to create a national pipeline database that is systematically updated and incorporated into industry geohazard assessments using ILI and other data sources.
