Surface and internal residual stress measurements have been made at pipeline girth welds deposited using standard field welding conditions. Four pipeline specimens of outside diameter 914mm and a wall thickness of 11 or 16 mm were used to investigate the effect of variations in preheat conditions, root pass electrode type, and pipe wall thickness.
