It has been shown that measures, other than the hydrotest, are available for detecting or preventing defects that may be introduced during pipe manufacture or pipeline construction. Most measures require enhanced quality management practices, which offer the added benefit of providing more information on the condition of the pipeline after construction. A combination of those measures, in conjunction with a robust quality management system, could be considered as a viable alternative to the pre-service hydrotest.
