INGAA Foundation Greenhouse Gas Summit Eric Thomas, Chief Operating Officer, attended a gas industry conference in Chicago on July 8 sponsored by the INGAA Foundation, which was also attended by representatives of several member companies, as well as a distribution of interests and vendors and consultants. The primary purpose was to assess actions needed by the industry to respond to pending greenhouse gas legislation and administrative rulemaking. The conclusion was that in the longer term the consequences on the industry could be dramatic and drastic, with solutions to achieve goals in out years currently unknown. Therefore, significant research will be necessary to develop technology solutions. However, in the next 5-10 years, all affected parties will be able to cope by using allowances or buying credits, and there is only modest and ongoing research needed to meet expected regulatory requirements. Near term action should focus on influencing legislation and regulation rather than technology development.
