The objective of this project was to develop a prototype instrumentation system and analysis procedures by which the various components of electrical current existing on a subsurface structure may be identified as to magnitude and source of origin. The resulting prototype equipment and data analysis procedure are called the Interference Monitoring System (IMS). This technique is based on the principle that each distinct source of current in the earth will generally induce current in a structure in a characteristic manner that is unique to the source. The approach was applied to a gas pipeline in...
The approach was applied to a gas pipeline in western Oregon. Instrumentation recording equipment and analysis procedures were developed and used to effectively demonstrate the capability of the system.
