DESCRIPTION: The American Petroleum Institute (API) is working on the development of a Recommended Practice (RP) for the assessment and management of dent/deformations in pipelines. The RP is titled “Assessment and Management of Dents in Pipelines,” and is referenced as RP1183. RP1183 is being developed to provide an update for the pipeline industry on the current state of knowledge on addressing and managing dents. The pipeline industry has been addressing dent fatigue and pressure cycling management for more than a decade through research programs sponsored through PRCI, and there is a substantial body of knowledge and research data to support a performance-based approach and advocate a practical engineering solution that PHMSA (and NTSB) can support in adopting a new performance-based approach for dent management. A key goal of developing the RP is to provide technical support needed to promote revisions or amendments to existing regulations to allow for engineering assessment methods to be applied to dent management and determine appropriate response actions when remediation/repair is required.  

 There is an RP1183 Work Group (WG) formed through the API Pipeline Integrity Group (PLIG), and there have been several initial meetings among the WG to begin the process of writing the RP. One of the key sections in the RP is on dent assessment approaches – i.e., how are companies assessing the remaining life of a dent and dents with coincident/closely-aligned features after detection through inspection. The WG and PRCI are co-sponsoring this industry workshop on dent assessment approaches and methods to support the section that is addressing the most recent approaches to dent assessment. The workshop will be co-sponsored by PRCI, as much of the information to be reviewed and discussed is based on PRCI sponsored research.  

 The objective of the workshop is review the current industry best practices and most recent research findings for dent assessment using engineering analysis methods and approaches, and use the information derived from the workshop to support the RP. The workshop will focus on engineering analysis methods and approaches to screen/prioritize and estimate the remaining life of a dent and dents with coincident/closely-aligned features after detection through inspection. The workshop will include a series of presentations by the SMEs that are considered leading practitioners in engineering analysis and applying methods and approaches to the assessment of dents in pipelines. 

 The preliminary agenda includes the following presenters and topics: 
Dr. Ravi Krishnamurthy --- strain-based analysis dent assessment, Ductile Failure Damage Indicator (DFDI)/API-579 
Dr. Chris Alexander – Stress Concentration Factor analysis 
Mr. Mike Rosenfeld – provide information on approaches presented at GPAC meetings and PHMSA initial acceptance of ECA  
Dr. Brian Leis – burst model for delayed failure and dent+gouge model 

 The WG Chair Mark Piazza of Colonial Pipeline Company will be facilitating the workshop, along with BMT Fleet Technology (BMT). BMT will also be presenting on the PRCI Dent Fatigue Assessment approach, which is based on over a decade of PRCI-sponsored R&D and full-scale testing.  

 Other topics will be addressed during the workshop that are related to dent assessment and engineering analysis, including the reliance on ILI and NDE data to support the assessment methods and approaches, additional research being conducted to further improve dent fatigue/burst assessments, and the upcoming PHMSA 2018 R&D Forum and what topics/ideas the industry should promote with regard to dent assessment and management. 

 A registration fee of $100 will be applied during check-out to cover meeting expenses and the cost of meals (light breakfast and lunch).
