Pipelines will be directly affected by the sweep of regulations accompanying the implementation of any Greenhouse Gas control programs. In particular, compressor stations are both a large consumer of fuel and a potential source of fugitive methane emissions from the variety of equipment that is in high-pressure service. A project entitled “Compressor & Pump Station Carbon Footprint Reduction Methods” began in mid-2008 to catalogue the large variety of GHG reduction technologies and work practices. The draft final report is in review, and the project will culminate with a Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, May 12th, immediately prior to the upcoming Compressor & Pump Station Technical Committee meeting. The Workshop will review the array of GHG mitigation technologies and work practices that have been documented by the project, and place the GHG reduction opportunities in the context of pending and possible legislation, and the carbon market dynamics that may develop.
